Actually bonsai was one thing I never saw in Japan. . .I don’t remember seeing any, at any rate. I saw lots of gardens, no bonsai.
That said, if you intend to take a “bonsai tour” someday, get your itinerary worked out beforehand. Maybe ask your teacher about it now. You won’t stumble across any bonsai by accident.
Maple Bonsai
The most beautiful bonsai and gardens are in Kyoto and Nara at temples. Most temples have an admission fee. Take a camera! If you come to Tokyo stop and see the Palace compound or if in Osaka stop and see the Castle. Have a safe trip. Welcome to Japan!

Bonsai is a hobby . There are many elderly people who are involved in bonsai.If you walk in a neighborhood you see bonsai here and there. I am not sure about the Tokyo bonsai exhibition. If you are down you can check out botanical gardens they have some unique bonsai.
In most of the temple and shrine grounds you will find bonsai.
